Russia 2014 World Cup: You Won't Believe How Much Fabio Capello Is Making As Russia's Coach

Everyone who follows the sport of soccer knows that players and coaches around the world get paid millions upon millions of dollars for their services. That statement was taken to the next level when the world found out that Russia’s coach Fabio Capello, according to Forbes, is making a whopping $11,235,210 annually for his services to the Russian Soccer Federation. To put it into perspective the two coaches behind him, England’s Roy Hodgson and Italy’s Cesare Prandelli, are making a combined $10,196,580.

That is an absurd amount of money to throw at a coach who has never won anything on the international level. Capello’s only other stint as an international coach came when he took charge of the English National Team from 2007-2012. In his time with the “Three Lions” Capello won 28 games, tied another 8, and lost 6. Oh, and they were knocked out at the hands of a 4-1 loss to Germany in the Round of 16. So when you look at what other coaches have done on the international level compared to him, it is somewhat perplexing to see the Italian coach get paid that sum of money.

Who knows what the Russian Federation was thinking outside of the fact that they believed that Capello gave their team the best chance of winning. That is why, after their recent tie in their opening match against S. Korea, there was some backlash from the world media. And who can blame them? Everything that an international coach does during his time with the national team is built towards the World Cup. Capello is under huge amounts of pressure and any result that does not see the Russians walk away with three points against Belgium will be a major disaster for not only Russia but Capello as well.

Capello’s current contract is set to run up until the end of the World Cup in 2018, which so happens will be held in Russia. But if things don’t go to plan in Brazil and Russia somehow don’t advance to the knockout rounds, I wonder how long we will be seeing Mr. Capello at the Russian helm.
