A 15-year-old Northern California high school student died Monday after an intruder stabbed her "multiple" times on campus, officials confirmed.

Family of the teenager identified her as Alicia Reynaga during a vigil outside the school. According to John Ramirez, superintendent for the Stockton Unified School District, the assailant approached and entered the front of Stagg High School in Stockton and started stabbing the teenager, who has not been identified.

The suspect was described as a man and not a student, he was taken into custody. A motive for the attack has not been determined. The suspect was apprehended "immediately" with the help of the school district police officer on the scene. A district police officer was nearby and was able to "do his job and help prevent that from continuing," Ramirez said.

Meanwhile, the victim was rushed to a hospital and later died. "It's a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," Ramirez said. He stated that it is not yet clear if the attacker and the victim knew each other.

Stockton Police Deputy Chief Eric Kane told reporters that the incident happened at approximately 11:00 a.m. local time. According to Kane, the only information he could provide about the suspect was that he was an adult male who appeared to be in his 40s. The suspect arrived at the school in a vehicle.

Ramirez explained that while there were school staff at the front of the school, the attacker was able to come through the gate and reach the student. "It happened so quick that they weren't able to stop it, but they were there immediately, hence why the assailant was able to be detained and taken into custody so quickly," he said.

Ramirez also confirmed that school officials will take a serious look at its security measures, "will definitely be reevaluating, absolutely," and shared that there was a scheduled meeting Monday afternoon to brief other schools in the district. He also pointed out that despite the suspect being apprehended very quickly, "The fact that the individual was detained so quickly pays credence to the fact that there were adults there and they were immediately accessible."

The school district said counselors are on site to help students process everything and give guidance to those who need it. The school was placed on lockdown following the incident.
