TOP GUN (Action drama) on REELZ Paramount Pictures

The crowd went wild at the San Diego Comic-Con when Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance.

Tom was there to present the trailer for "Top Gun: Maverick," which is also dubbed as "Top Gun 2." It's set to be released on Jun. 26, 2020. He told the Comic-Con crowd, "Everything you see in this film is for real. We're working with the Navy, all of the flying you see in this picture is real, I really wanted to give you all an experience of what it is to be inside that aircraft."

"Top Gun: Maverick" is the sequel to the 1986 film "Top Gun," which catapulted Tom to A-lister status. Tom reprises his role as brilliant-but-reckless fighter plane pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

"Top Gun 2" has Tom playing mentor to actor Miles Teller, who plays the son of his late flight buddy Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (played by Anthony Edwards). Miles, who has starred in movies like "Whiplash" and "Only the Brave," bested two other contenders for the coveted role — "Hidden Figures" actor Glen Powell and "X-Men: First Class" actor Nicholas Hoult.

Also in the cast are Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris.

"Top Gun 2" will be directed by Joe Kosinski, who helmed "Oblivion." Then, aside from Tom and Skydance CEO David Ellison, Jerry Bruckheimer is listed as film producer.

The sequel has quite a lot to live up to. The original movie has already secured its spot in U.S. pop culture. A Los Angeles Times article published shortly after the movie's release revealed, "Navy recruiting officials say they didn’t keep track of that operation’s success, but they have noticed more inquiries than usual about the naval aviation officer candidate program since the movie’s release."

The 1986 article also revealed that the movie was shot at the real-life Top Gun school, which is officially known as the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School.

The original "Top Gun" also did a lot for eyewear company Ray-Ban. At that time, everyone wanted to get hold of Maverick's Ray-Bans. For the record, he wears the Model 3025 (Aviator Classic) sunglasses. It has a gold frame and green lenses. Needless to say, the movie was the best way to sell the aviator glasses without really trying. People just wanted to channel the fearless Maverick.

There's no doubt that "Top Gun: Maverick" will have a similar impact.
