In the middle of a tirade on Truth Social against Barack Obama, President Donald Trump also targeted the Democratic Party, alleging that Kamala Harris's campaign "probably illegally" paid millions for endorsements from Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, and Al Sharpton.
The president claimed he was "looking at the large amount of money owed by the Democrats" following the 2024 presidential election in a Truth Social post shared Saturday. He accused the party of paying $11 million "to singer Beyoncé for an ENDORSEMENT (she never sang, not one note, and left the stage to a booing and angry audience!)."
When the rumor began circulating in November, shortly after the event, the singer's mother, Tina, denied claims that her daughter was paid for her endorsement.
"Beyonce did not receive a penny for speaking at a Presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harrris's Rally in Houston," Knowles wrote in an Instagram post at the time. "In fact she actually paid for her own flights for her and her team, and total Glam."
Trump also claimed in Saturday's post that Winfrey was paid $3 million, repeating allegations she previously denied in November. In response, Harpo Productions, which Winfrey owns, clarified that it received $1 million from the Harris campaign to cover production costs for Unite for America, a live-streamed event held on September 19 outside Detroit. The statement emphasized, "Oprah Winfrey was at no point during the campaign paid a personal fee, nor did she receive a fee from Harpo."
Additionally, Trump falsely claimed Al Sharpton, whom he called a "very low rated TV 'anchor'" and "total lightweight!" was paid $600,000 by the campaign.
"These ridiculous fees were incorrectly stated in the books and records," Trump continued. "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PAY FOR AN ENDORSEMENT. IT IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL TO DO SO."
"Can you imagine what would happen if politicians started paying for people to endorse them. All hell would break out! Kamala, and all of those that received Endorsement money, BROKE THE LAW. They should all be prosecuted! Thank you for your attention to this matter," he concluded.
Trump's accusations against the Harris campaign are not new. In May, he accused the former vice president of conducting an "illegal election scam at the highest level," regarding her use of campaign funds. He announced plans to launch a "major investigation," claiming the expenditures amounted to an "illegal campaign contribution." Trump added that "Bruce Springsteen, Oprah, Bono and, perhaps, many others, have a lot of explaining to do!!!"
Trump has faced similar complaints himself. To cover legal expenses estimated at over $100 million, he has relied heavily on his political action committees (PACs), which shifted personal legal costs onto campaign donors.
In one case, filed in May 2024, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics accused his campaign of attempting to conceal settlement payments by routing them through third parties. The complaint stemmed from a former staffer's claim that the Make America Great Again PAC, which evolved from Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, offered to funnel a pregnancy discrimination settlement through outside entities to avoid federal disclosure rules.
When the staffer's attorney objected, the campaign's lawyer allegedly responded, "What we would do is the Campaign pays me, and then I cut a check to you guys." The staffer also claimed that similar undisclosed payments were made to settle other discrimination and harassment cases.
The Federal Election Commission also notably dropped its investigation into whether Trump violated election laws with a $130,000 payment made shortly before the 2016 election to Stormy Daniels, a pornographic film actress, facilitated by his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, in May 2021.
