President Donald Trump is reportedly considering getting involved in New York City's mayoral race to prevent Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani from getting elected.

The New York Times detailed on Wednesday that Trump has been asking officials and business leaders about who has the best shot at beating Mamdani. The field includes former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and incumbent mayor Eric Adams, both of whom are trailing Mamdani in the polls.

A new poll conducted by Zenith Research and Public Progress Solutions found that Mamdani has 50% of the prospective votes, with Cuomo coming far behind at 22%. Republican candidate Curtis Silwa got 13% and Eric Adams received 7% of the support.

Trump has been told that Cuomo, who lost against Mamdani in the Democratic primaries, could still be competitive as an independent. The two have spoken directly about the election in a previously unreported call, the outlet added.

Donors of Adams and Cuomo have been urging Trump to intervene, saying he could help voters and donors rally behind a single candidate. Trump has said that he believes Cuomo should stay in the race: "He's running against a communist," he claimed. "I would think that he would have a good shot of winning."

Despite leading in the polls, Mamdani doesn't have the full backing of the Democratic party. Since joining the New York City mayoral race in October 2024, Mamdani has picked up endorsements from dozens of prominent lawmakers, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and New York Attorney General Letitia James. He has also earned backing from progressive organizations, such as the New York Working Families Party, Jewish Voice for Peace Action and the United Federation of Teachers.

Still, several key political figures remain hesitant to endorse him. As a mayoral candidate, he has put forward an ambitious progressive platform that includes raising taxes on the wealthy, creating state-owned grocery stores, freezing rent, and providing free preschool, among other proposals.
