The Pimpri Chinchwad police have nabbed an unemployed miscreant who allegedly raped a young woman he met on Tinder. Abhijit Wagh, a 26-year-old was apprehended on Monday after a complaint was registered against him by a woman, who claimed that he forced himself upon her after intoxicating her and taking her to his place post the date.

Police statements indicate that the date was planned at a hotel in Hinjewadi on December 26, where the man reportedly coerced the lady to drink. Post which, he cajoled her to go back home with him. Upon reaching his place, Wagh made advances toward the lady until he was pushed away. The obstruction triggered him to inflict assault and rape her after repeatedly hitting her with his shoes.

The sexual assault occurred between 4 pm to 11.30 p.m., post which the lady managed to flee the scene and lodge a complaint. Wagh currently faces multiple charges and has also been booked under sections 376, 376 (2) (m), 325, 328, 366, 385, 504 of the Indian Penal Code.

“We produced the accused before a court. The court has remanded him in police custody till January 2 for further investigation,” said Senior police inspector Vivek Muglikar of Wakad police station.

“Probe so far has revealed that the woman got to know the accused through an online dating application on December 25. The next day, the incident took place. The accused is currently not working anywhere,” he added.

Police sub-inspector Sangita Gode will be helming the investigation, as part of a further probe. There has been a rise in violence against women who’ve met potential partners through dating portals in India.
