A 51-year-old Indonesian father was killed and eaten by a giant crocodile. Distressing video footage captured by a local shows the man being dragged underwater by the enormous reptile.

On Feb. 15, the victim, only identified as Luther, was bathing in the water after gathering palm leaves by the Bebatu river in the North Kalimantan province, when the 13ft-long croc pounced on him.

Luther desperately fought back by repeatedly hitting on the croc's head but the predator refused to let him off its jaws. The reptile dragged the father underwater while his friends helplessly tried to scare it away.

The locals set out searching for Luther in the area he was last seen.

"This is where a person was attacked by a crocodile but have not yet been found until now. We are making a video here," a voice is heard saying in the video.

That’s when the man saw the crocodile appear again with Luther, who was struggling to fight the giant.

"Oh my God the crocodile ate the man," the voice behind the camera said.

The footage filmed by the local later showed the crocodile dragging what appeared to be a screaming Luther into the water.

Village head Mahmuda said incidents of people being attacked by crocodiles in the canal have happened before, the Dailymail reported. Watch video here.

Plantation officials have now placed notice boards in the area warning visitors not to get close to the canal.

"No activity in this area, it's dangerous. There's a crocodile," the boards read.

According to sources, Luther’s body has not been recovered yet and authorities are continuing their efforts to find him.

Lieutenant Colonel Tri Prio Utomo of the Tana Tidung Military District said: "We are constrained by the location where there are lots of bushes, branching canals, and inadequate equipment but our team will try our best to find the victim."

"We urge everyone not to come near the canal so please obey the signs to avoid these incidents from happening."
