The girl on the cover of the Obamacare Affordable Care Act website has stepped out of the shadows today. The Colombian immigrant, who asked to be called by her first name, Adriana, only, spoke with ABC News about her experience of being the victim of cyberbullying. "They have nothing else to do but hide behind the computer. They're cyberbullying," Adriana told ABC News' Amy Robach after enduring weeks of attacks via blogs and social media after the website failed to provide adequate response to usears.
When Obamacare's ACA website launched on October 1st 2013, it was Adriana's face that greeted them. Soon, however, when glitches began frustrating users, the smiling picture began to be mocked, photoshopped, altered and lampooned. Adriana herseld soon stopped smiling. "Like I said it was shocking. It was upsetting. It was sad. We were having a hard day when we read all this," she said. "And in a way, I'm glad that my son is not old enough to understand, because you know whatever happens to you, it hurts them too."
The young Colombian was not paid for the photo: she was only compensated by having photos taken of her family. Adriana has been accused of being an undocumented migrant: in fact, she lives with her husband who is American and has been a permanent resident for six years. She also has a 21-month-old son. "I mean, I don't know why people should hate me because it's just a photo. I didn't design the website. I didn't make it fail, so I don't think they should have any reasons to hate me," Adriana told ABC News.
