Prince William asked Queen Elizabeth II for permission to marry Kate Middleton years ago, and Her Majesty said yes. According to a royal expert, the monarch’s decision to allow her grandson to marry the Duchess of Cambridge was shocking for everyone.

Coleen Harris, a former Buckingham Palace staff, told People that even though Kate came from an upper-middle-class family and also has links to the aristocracy, the fact of the matter is that she had no background in being a royal. As such, Kate was regarded as an ordinary woman.

Several years later, the Queen also did a similar thing for Prince Harry. After the Duke of Sussex asked for permission from his grandmother, Her Majesty allowed Prince Harry to wed Meghan Markle.

Meghan is an African American divorcee and actress, and she also doesn’t have any background in royalty. But the fact that the monarch allowed Prince Harry to marry Meghan was proof that the 93-year-old has also been modernizing the monarchy.

“The Queen is allowing the Royal family to modernize,” Harris said. “We have come a really long way. They are not stuffy and immovable,” she added.

Meanwhile, royal author Katie Nicholl said that the Queen sees Meghan as a “positive person.” The expert said that the Duchess of Sussex is a conventional royal.

“Everything from being a divorcée to being a bit older than Prince Harry, to coming from a dual heritage family, you might wonder if the Queen being of a certain generation and, of course, being the Queen might have been at all concerned,” she said. “But everything I heard from the sources I spoke to was that she really felt from the outset that Meghan was a positive person in Prince Harry's life,” Nicholl added.

But even though the Queen seems to have a wonderful relationship with Meghan, she still hasn’t come to her defense amid all of the controversies being thrown at her. The public has been criticizing Prince Harry and Meghan over their decision to use a private jet to their recent vacation. The royal couple reportedly rode Elton John’s private jet four times in 11 days.
