A 68-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her 81-year-old husband following an argument reportedly on how the latter’s coffee tasted.
The female suspect behind the 81-year-old man’s murder was identified as Sheila Downey. The incident reportedly happened last Apr. 24.
According to the Memphis Police Department, they responded to a report of a person being wounded at 832 Wrenwood Avenue at around 8:11 a.m. on Sunday.
When police arrived, they found an 81-year-old man stabbed multiple times per an affidavit, Fox 13 reported. The unnamed victim was brought to Regional One in critical condition where he died at around 4:00 p.m. on the said date.
Before the man died, he told police that he and his wife went into the laundry room and reportedly attempted to drink bleach. But when the man tried to stop the woman, the 68-year-old grabbed a knife from the kitchen and then started stabbing him multiple times.
The man was just allegedly trying to stop the woman from harming herself before the stabbing incident occurred, WREG reported.
The man was only identified as Ray and is a retired Memphis Firefighter, the report added.
Police arrested Sheila Downey when she returned to the scene of the crime. She is now facing first-degree murder according to records.
"Officers were advised that the victim was involved in an altercation with his wife when she reportedly stabbed him. The suspect, 68-year-old Sheila Downey, was not on the scene when officers arrived, [but] she returned and was taken into custody," read an official release from the Memphis Police Department.
A look at the 2020 crime statistics for Tennessee showed that there were 682 reported murders that year. 317 of those cases were reportedly cleared and resolved.
Further, there were also 94 reported murders with 86 of them cleared as far as domestic violence had happened. It was also found that in 2020, there had been 21 cases where a spouse had murdered their partner.
