A 16-year-old girl was murdered by her adopted brother during an altercation over the latter’s alcohol addiction.

The minor, identified as Ruksar, a resident of Sarita Vihar in Delhi, India was found lying on a bed inside her home with her throat slit, police said on Thursday, Dec. 16.

Ruksar’s mother has accused her adopted son, Shan Mohammad of murdering the minor girl, according to reports.

The woman had adopted the now 32-year-old Mohammad around 10 years ago. Since then, the three had been living together at the home where the tragic episode unfolded on Wednesday, according to the police.

Officers were dispatched to the residence on Wednesday afternoon after receiving reports of a murder. The responding officers forced open the front door to find Ruksar laying dead on a bed with her throat slit.

“During the inquiry, the victim’s mother told that on Wednesday morning, she left for work as usual leaving her minor daughter and her adopted son Mohammad at home. When she returned home, she found her flat was locked from outside. She called her son on the telephone to find out about her daughter’s whereabouts but he gave a suspicious response," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Esha Pandey said.

The woman told the police that Mohammad, a liquor addict, often picked up fights with her and her daughter after he came home drunk, according to reports. She accused him of murdering her minor daughter.

Based on the woman’s statement, a manhunt was initiated to locate the suspect and a short while later investigators received a tip-off that he was attempting to flee the city. He was then traced and taken into custody, police said.

During interrogation, the accused told police that he was in a live-in relationship with the minor’s mother since 2013, the NDTV reported.

He confessed that he is addicted to alcohol due to which the victim and her mother frequently confronted him, the DCP said.

The suspect said that on the day of the incident, he was drinking at home while Ruksar was busy on a call with a nearby relative, complaining about his actions.

Enraged by this, Mohammad confronted Ruksar and an argument broke out between the duo during which he slapped her and she slapped him back, police said.

In a fit of rage, he rushed to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and slit her throat. He then locked the house from outside and fled the scene on foot, Pandey said.

A case of murder has been registered against the suspect under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the officer added.
