Looking to maintain their lead in the Barclays Premier League, the Arsenal Gunners hope to earn what would be a tremendous victory when they host Liverpool this weekend at Emirates Stadium. Manager Arsene Wenger and his squad have raced out to a two-point lead in the uber-competitive Premier League thanks to earning 7 wins and a draw through 9 league matches but despite the club's early success, multiple clubs remain on their heels with plenty of matches to be played. Chelsea and Liverpool sit just two points back of Arsenal, with each club earning a total of 20 points while Tottenham and Southampton remain in striking distance as well. With only an eight point gap separating first place Arsenal from eighth place Manchester United, the BPL has once again proven to be one of the most competitive leagues in the world.
Set to take on a Liverpool squad looking for a keynote win in league play, manager Arsene Wenger knows his Arsenal club will need to be firing on all cylinders throughout the big match at the Emirates this weekend. Noting that he will once again rely on star Olivier Giroud in this match, the Gunners boss is also confident that his play-making centre forward won't let the hype surrounding his match-up with Liverpool and international star Luis Suarez mask his ability to perform in what could very well turn out to be one of the best matches in the BPL all season.
"I believe that Giroud has proven since the start of the season that he is an exceptional striker and I am convinced that he will be up for it," Wenger said. "They have different styles. Giroud is a real centre-forward who uses his power, he is really central. Suarez is more a player who goes on the flanks and is more a dribbler. I think our target is to have the ball and master the situation because we are dominating and we have more of the ball than our opponents, and if we have the ball a lot we do not need to worry too much about our opponents and that will be the target tomorrow."
Fully aware of the fact that his club could take over the top spot in the Premier League with a win over Arsenal and some help in the standings, Liverpool's Aly Cissokho says that a win over the Gunners would certainly propel his side on multiple levels this season.
"I think if we could get the three points against Arsenal it would send a strong message to the other teams in the competition," Cissokho said. The tough ones can be against the lower teams in the league, where you might think of having a more relaxed outing. But if you're setting out to qualify for the Champions League through a domestic league like the Premier League you really have to concentrate and remain serious for each match, whether it's against a team from the lower end of the table or one right at the top. We're only a couple of weeks ahead of the international break, so it would be good to take the three points at Arsenal, and look forward to the next home match and try to stay at the top of the table during the break."
