The first gay dads of Britain have officially split after one of them started dating their daughter’s ex-boyfriend who is half his age. Barrie Drewitt-Barlow admitted on Saturday breaking off his relationship with Tony Drewitt-Barlow and opened up about their new unconventional living arrangement.

Barrie and Tony were dubbed as Britain’s first gay fathers in 1999 when a surrogate gave birth to their twins, Saffron and Aspen. They were the first same-sex couple to be named on a birth certificate as parents and their relationship was one of the most documented in Britain.

After 32 years of being together, Barrie and Tony parted ways after Barrie admitted falling in love with 25-year-old Scott Hutchison, Saffron’s ex-boyfriend. In an interview on Saturday, Barrie insisted that his relationship with Hutchison is “the real deal” and that he’s not having a mid-life crisis.

“I’ve fallen in love with Scott and he has done the same,” Barrie said. “I feel stupid at my age to have these feelings about someone other than Tony and half my age. But when you know something is right, it’s right. We have not made definite plans but I would like to marry Scott,” he added.

Barrie has revealed that their whole family remains intact despite their separation; only that Hutchison is now living with them. Currently, Hutchison and the whole family are living together under one roof at their $7.5-million mansion in Florida. Saffron and Aspen refer to Tony as their dad, Barrie as their daddy, and Scott as their stepdad.

According to Barrie, both Tony and Saffron are accepting of their relationship. He also denied having a midlife crisis, saying that if he were having one, then he would buy himself a Porsche 911. “This is the real deal,” he said. “But not everyone will get it, as our living arrangements are unorthodox—I feel like I’m living in a commune, we are still living together,” he added.

Barrie and Tony have been sleeping in separate bedrooms after growing romantically distant from each other in recent years. While he said that Tony would always be his “true love,” Barrie said their current relationship is nothing more than platonic.
