"We got him," said Utah Governor Spencer Cox today before announcing a man identified as Tyler Robinson as the main suspect in the murder of the conservative activist and personality Charlie Kirk, in a press conference in the city of Orem.

The news had been announced two hours before by President Donald Trump, who made a spontaneous appearance on "Fox and Friends" on Fox News.

According to Cox, Robinson was first seen on the campus of Valley Utah University arriving in a gray Dodge Challenger, which was later confirmed to be his car. When he was arrested, he was wearing the same clothes.

The governor confirmed that he was turned in by a family member, who wasn't identified. There have been earlier reports that it was his father who told authorities that Robinson "had become more political in recent years."

FBI Director Kash Patel added that the investigators had also talked to Robinson's roommate, who wasn't identified either. This person showed the agents conversations with the suspect, with information about his plans, including picking up a rifle, and details of where he had left it.

Patel added that Tyler Robinson was detained at 10 pm local time, 33 hours after the murder.

Kirk was fatally shot during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University on September 10. Officials have described the attack as targeted. A high-powered rifle was recovered near the scene, and images of a person of interest were released as tips poured in from the public.

Officials are expected to give more details later about evidence collected and specific charges.

The killing prompted bipartisan condemnation and heightened security considerations around political events. Investigators previously reviewed surveillance footage and witness videos, and they received thousands of tips. With a suspect now reportedly in custody, authorities say the investigation will continue to establish motive and determine whether others were involved, although there hasn`t been any more arrests.
