Cinco de Mayo Don'ts
Is this really what Cinco de Mayo is about? Shutterstock/holbox

Cinco de Mayo has gone off with a bang, we are sure, in many places. However, nowhere has it gone more oh-so-wrong than at MSNBC. We tried, America, we tried. We wrote endlessly about how not to be offensive on Cinco de Mayo. But it seems that the folks at MSNBC didn't pay much attention to us. On their "Day Ahead" show, one of the producers was seen stumbling across the screen wearing a sombrero and apparently drinking Tequila as the anchor talked Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexican independence. But it is a day to celebrate Mexican pride. It's one of the only major victories the Mexican army can claim, and with the U.S.'s growing Mexican population, its a great way to show solidarity and support. But there are ways to celebrate respectfully and then there is MSNBC. Sauntering around like a drunk Mexican shaking maracas perpetuates a stereotype we have been fighting for far too long.

Cinco de Mayo is about celebrating Mexican heritage, which involves a lot more than just getting wasted on tequila. As a country with one of the richest and most exciting cultural expressions in the world, it is maddening to see our culture mocked in this way. Cinco de Mayo is absolutely an excuse to have a good time, and yes, right now there are probably a lot of drunk people celebrating it, both Mexican and not. But implying that this is the only thing Mexico has to celebrate? Come on! What do you think?
