A Democratic lawmaker announced he will introduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth even if House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has dismissed the viability of the effort.

Concretely, Shri Thanedar's articles of impeachment will accuse Hegseth of "Murder and Conspiracy to Murder and Reckless and Unlawful Mishandling of Classified Information," according to Axios.

Asked about the possibility on Monday, Jeffries said "Republicans will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor of the House of Representatives, and we know that's the case." "Donald Trump will order them not to do it."

Axios had previously noted that Thanedar has angered Democratic leadership with his efforts. He sought to force a vote to impeach President Donald Trump in May but pulled the initiative under pressure from party leaders.

He, however, is not the only one seeking accountability for Hegseth should reports that he authorized a second strike against an alleged drug vessel that finished off survivors of the first one be confirmed.

California Governor Gavin Newsom mocked him after the latter published a meme showing children's cartoon Franklin the turtle shooting "narco terrorists" with a rocket-propelled grenade.

"Justo go to prison, Pete," reads the image published by Newsom's press office, which also features a cartoon showing one character in prison.

The White House confirmed this week that a second strike had taken place, but denied Hegseth ordered it. Hegseth said he didn't stay after the first strike, but defended the legality of the second one and said the decision was made by the mission's commander, Admiral Mitch Bradley.

However, other reports noted that Pentagon officials are concerned that the Trump administration is throwing Bradley under the bus. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday that Bradley "worked well within his authority and the law, directing the engagement to ensure the boat was destroyed."

The statement, the outlet added, left Defense Department officials angry at the possibility that Hegseth won't take responsibility for any legal consequence that could stem from the attack. "This is 'protect Pete' bullsh-t," one official told the outlet. Some civilian staff are considering leaving the administration, it added.

Another report claimed that the two survivors of a strike against an alleged drug boat were trying to salvage some of the cargo before being hit a second time. A source familiar with the matter told CBS News that the survivors appeared to be communicating with others, and that there were more boats nearby that could have picked up the cargo.
