Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán’s lawyers José González Meza, Juan Pablo Badillo and Carlos Urrutia held a press conference where they announced they will reveal the hefty list of politicians who have benefited from the drug lord’s money if they do not improve the conditions in which he is being kept. The lawyers reiterated what Guzmán’s wife said about authorities from the Altiplano prison attempting against his life by depriving him of food, sleep, medicines and communication. To increase the pressure, the lawyers have decided to go on a hunger strike outside the prison where the Sinaloa Cartel leader is kept.

This comes after Guzmán’s eldest daughter, Rosa Isela Guzmán Ortiz, gave an interview for The Guardian where she assured that her father was betrayed by former partners and Mexican politicians who were worried he would speak. “My dad is not a criminal. The government is guilty,” she said. Guzmán Ortiz also said that even after her father’s conversation with Sean Penn, the Mexican (and U.S.) government helped him sneak into California twice! When asked how one of the world’s most wanted fugitives crossed the heavily guarded border she smiled. “I asked him the same, believe me.”

While none of El Chapo's family members were at the press conference to confirm the identity of his supposed lawyers, no one has denied them either. This comes after the drug lord declared he is willing to plead guilty for narcotrafficking accusations in the U.S. on the condition that he is sent to a Medium Security prison upon arrival to the country, as reported by one of his lawyers José Refugio Rodríguez. During an interview with Univision, Guzmán’s lawyer revealed his client has many reasons to battle the extradition but he is willing to accept the translation if his needs are met.
