An underage gang rape victim has allegedly taken her own life after the families of her alleged assailants pressured her into a settlement in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, India on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

The unnamed 16-year-old minor was reportedly gang raped by a group of men identified only as Viresh, Jinesh, Suvendra, and Bipin in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Following the horrific ordeal, the girl's family lodged an assault complaint against the men on Aug. 15, and one of the accused, Viresh, was later arrested, the Times Of India reported.

According to the teen victim's relatives, the families of girl's alleged assailants had been harassing her to force her to enter into a settlement after First Information Reports (FIR) were filed against the suspects. Traumatized by her horrific ordeal and antagonized by the suspects' families, the teen reportedly killed herself by hanging a noose from the ceiling of her room in her family home on Tuesday.

Local law enforcement quickly responded to the scene after the victim's family found her body. Her remains have been sent to the coroner's office for an autopsy.

Following the girl's suicide, the three suspects, Jinesh, Suvendra, and Bipin, have allegedly gone into hiding. Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police Chakresh Mishra revealed that a special team has been deployed to nab the three accused, News18 reported.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a 17-year-old girl allegedly killed herself after she was heinously gang raped by three men at her home in Haryana, India on Friday, April 1, Latin Times reported.

On Friday, while the teen victim was alone at home preparing for her 12th-grade examinations, three suspects allegedly stormed into her residence and proceeded to abduct her. After kidnapping her, the suspects then forcibly took her to an isolated area nearby and allegedly took turns sexually assaulting the underage victim.

Just hours after being brutally gang-raped by the three suspects, the victim allegedly took her own life by hanging a noose from the ceiling of her house.

Following the incident, the accused were charged under sections of kidnapping, gang rape, and abetment to suicide of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
