General Motors news source GM Authority has reported that the American automaker has just completed a major trademark filing with the United States Patent Office -- the "Z28" moniker returns!

GM first introduced the Z28 in 1968 as the range-topping Regular Production Option (RPO), offering upgraded performance components to meet necessary regulations for entry in the SCCA Trans-Am sedan racing class. Chevrolet developed a 302 cubic-inch V8 and also added a stiffer suspension, 15-inch Rally wheels, upgraded quick-ratio steering, and a heavy duty radiator. The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 also featured racing stripes and bespoke badging to set it apart. Later that year, Mark Donahue would win the 1968 SCCA series championship in Roger Penske's Z28, elevating the 'Z28' to legendary status.

More than four decades later, GM is looking to extend Camaro's rich heritage. Details are limited on what GM and Chevrolet are exactly planning to do with the moniker but the speculators at GM Authority are suggesting that the Z28 will "even out-muscle the ZL1."

Another prediction is the use of the Z28 designation to replace Camaro SS, as a new Zeta-platform SS sedan is expected to come some time next year. GM might choose to rename the Camaro SS just to minimize moniker confusion once the SS sedan hits the market.

Whatever GM is up to is anybody's guess for now. Stay tuned as we report the latest on the Z28.
