Queen Elizabeth II thought that as a member of the distinguished Spencer family, Princess Diana will have no trouble adjusting to royal life. But the Princess of Wales did struggle, and coupled with Prince Charles’ seeming indifference to her plight, it might have even led to the rapid unraveling of their marriage.

In his book “Diana: Her True Story,” royal expert Andrew Morton revealed how Princess Diana confided to friends that she found it hard to adjust to the royal lifestyle. “One minute I was a nobody, the next minute I was Princess of Wales, mother, media toy, member of this family. It was too much for one person to handle,” Morton wrote.

Being away from home and transplanted into a totally new environment, Princess Diana could only turn to Prince Charles. Morton narrated how an emotional Diana would plead with her husband to assist her.

“The sound of voices raised in anger and hysterical sobbing could be plainly heard from the suite of rooms occupied by the Prince and Princess of Wales at Sandringham House,” Morton wrote. “Diana pleaded, cajoled and quarrelled violently with Charles as she tried to win his assistance.”

But Charles didn’t seem to understand the emotional turmoil his young wife was going through. “The Prince seemed incapable of understanding or wishing to comprehend the turmoil in Diana’s life,” the author narrated.

At one point, Princess Diana pleaded with Prince Charles as he was preparing to go riding at Sandringham estate. “Her husband simply dismissed her plight and carried on with his plan to go riding. Her relationship with Prince Charles was unravelling rapidly,” Morton added.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Prince Charles would be clueless about how his actions might irritate Princess Diana. For instance, he brought books and painting materials during their honeymoon when what Diana wanted most was for them to talk and spend time together.

Queen Elizabeth II initially thought that Princess Diana’s transition into the life of the royal family would be a smooth one. After all, unlike Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, who only made direct contact with the family when they met their respective husbands, Prince William and Prince Harry, Diana is a member of the Spencer family, which has long been a part of British nobility.
