Queen Elizabeth II is known for being polite and gracious. However, there are also instances wherein she can’t help but show her disapproval of the person she is talking to.

Her Majesty typically engages in conversation when she’s out in public. But when she feels she’s had enough, she tends to move her handbag from one arm to the other. This is a subtle social cue that the monarch’s staff is aware of, which means that she wants the ongoing conversation to wrap up immediately.

“When Her Majesty is truly keen on making her escape, she makes the more dramatic gesture of spinning her ring, indicating that her staff should move her along, pronto,” a source told People. “Placing her bag on the floor sends the same message,” the source added.

If the Queen notices signs of rudeness from those she invites to the palace, it is highly likely that the same people would no longer score another invite from her. Some rude behaviors in front of Her Majesty include speaking and eating before she does.

Australian cricketer Dennis Lillee previously told a journalist how his meeting with the Queen went down. At that time, Lillee uttered a joke that he didn’t realize broke royal protocol. The Queen managed to keep her composure and politely told Lillee, “How very amusing for you.”

Lillee admitted to feeling sheepish after being put in place. But he also realized how polite Her Majesty really was.

Meanwhile, the Queen made headlines this week after it was reported that she issued a warning to Kate Middleton after the latter unintentionally exposed her legs during her outing at Bletchley Park. It has been revealed that Kate didn’t wear tights during her royal engagement.

A royal expert told Business Insider that female royals are required to wear nude stockings when they are out in public. This is the only steadfast rule in terms of what the Queen requires, but Kate broke the rule.
