Protests have continued in Puerto Rico, and dissent remains strong. Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Roselló faces public outcry for his resignation after leaked private messages between him and his cabinet reveal sexist language and derogatory homophobic remarks against Puerto Rico star Ricky Martin.

Among the disturbing remarks are jokes about shooting a local mayor and heavy insults against a local female politician. From protests that spread in San Juan streets, the dissenting voices now hail from various cities across the United States like Chicago, Miami, New York City, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

TV actor and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda joined Wednesday protests in New York City with a Ricky Martin Foundation shirt and Puerto Rico’s flag, The Guardian reports. He came to the demonstrations with his father, who was raised in Puerto Rico.

“The governor has lost the support of the people. The people are leading this,” Miranda told The Guardian during the demonstration, where he sang tunes along with over a hundred protesters. “The governor has lost their confidence, and every step he takes now should be about the peaceful transition of power.”

The actor remains vocal of his opinion online by continuously retweeting posts that show dissent to the governor in power. Few other celebrities have taken the same steps.

Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny also announced on Instagram that he’s taking a pause on his European tour to join the demonstrations against the homophobic governor. Singer Ricky Martin also expressed calls for resignation on a Twitter post.

Miranda recently appeared at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 panel of “His Dark Materials,” HBO’s new fantasy show after “Game Of Thrones.” Gone are the dragons, and the show now features demons in a unique take.

“His Dark Materials” is an adaptation of a Philip Pullman trilogy. The plot follows an 11-year-old girl who gets adopted by a charming Mrs. Coulter, who happens to be the leader of a child-abducting project.

Vulture reveals from its Comic-Con takeaways that Miranda agreed to be in the movie before even knowing what his role would be. Reading Pullman novels apparently was a significant part of Miranda and his wife’s courtship. It turned out that Miranda was “intimately” familiar with his character in the film.

The HBO series is hitting television in the fall of 2019.

Pullman’s trilogy has been out for adaptation before on the big screen with “The Golden Compass” in 2007, starring Dakota Blue Richards and Nicole Kidman.
