An abusive husband has been accused of heinously strangling his wife to death over anger that she could not bear a child in Pune, Maharashtra, India on Friday, March 18.

The accused, identified as Devanand Macchindra Kalel, 30, a resident of Trimurti Heights in Ambegaon Budruk and a construction site painter by profession, allegedly strangled his 24-year-old wife Kajal to death on Friday, March 18, spurred by frequent domestic issues at their residence.

Following the killing, the victim's father Maruti Bad, 57, of Kalyan, filed a police complaint against Kalel. The husband was arrested by the Bharati Vidyapeeth police officers on murder charges on Saturday, March 19, Hindustan Times reported.

“Kalel works as a painter at construction sites. He and Kajal got married in July 2021 and since then, the two used to pick up fights on various domestic issues,” Avinash Kawathekar, Assistant Police Inspector (API) of Bharati Vidyapeeth police, said.

Despite consistent attempts to bear a baby, Kalel and Kajal did not have any children. Kalel allegedly regularly picked arguments and fights over the fact that Kajal could not bear a child for him. On Friday night, March 18, a similar confrontation ensued between the couple, and in a fit of rage, Kalel strangulated Kajal to death with his bare hands, the Times Of India reported.

The crime reportedly took place in a small apartment where the two resided together.
