There are many rivalries in the wide world of sports that easily capture the attention of even the smallest of fans and it is because of these long-standing match-ups that amateur and professional sports continue to grow on an international scale. Whether you're a fan of the Boston Red Sox rivalry with the New York Yankees, a fan of the Michigan v. Ohio State football classic or even a great local rivalry, the intimacy and togetherness these contests bring surely make it special. Another great tradition lies in the world of professional soccer. Having to only travel about 4.5 miles to reach the opponent's home turf, Manchester United and Manchester City have created one of the best overall rivalries not just in soccer, but in all of professional sports.
Playing twice last season - with the clubs splitting 2 BPL matches - Manchester United and Manchester City know the upcoming Manchester Derby certainly won't define the season but it can be used as a tremendous confidence boost for the team that comes out victorious. The Red Devils - led by first year head coach David Moyes - will enter their first derby against Man City without the presence of Sir Alex Ferguson, who stepped away from Old Trafford at the end of last season after 26 years as Man U boss. With both clubs currently tied in the standings with 7 points and just 3 behind Premier League leader Liverpool, a win in this contest will certainly propel the victors up in the ranks, a significant act since the early standings indicate a tight race.
"They're all big games," Man U star Wayne Rooney said. "Obviously United and Liverpool has been a massive game over the years. City have had their success recently, but I would probably say that United and Liverpool is still the biggest game. It's a massive game between two title contenders. It's not going to define the season, but it's a big game, a local derby and I'm looking forward to the match."
