New York congresswoman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez emerged as one of the handful of names mentioned by a political newspaper who could possibly be chosen by the Democrats as their presidential candidate for the 2024 elections should President Joe Biden decide not to run.

Cortez gained popularity over the past years for being a freshman legislator in the game and being a young Hispanic woman. Medicare for All and a federal jobs guarantee are just some of the issues she ran on, mirroring a new generation of Democrats in politics.

According to TIME Magazine, Cortez is a “political phenomenon,” labeling her as “part activist, part legislator, arguably the best storyteller in the party since Barack Obama and perhaps the only Democrat right now with the star power to challenge President Donald Trump’s.”

However, the number one question is if she will be able to run for the highest position in office due to age requirements. Strategists also see a problem with whether Ocasio-Cortez is too liberal to be able to clinch a spot in the party’s primary or general election.

TIME mentioned that Ocasio-Cortez is seen as more concerned with movements than elections itself as “she doesn’t talk about flipping seats and votes, but rather of winning hearts and minds.”

In one of her interviews, she mentioned pushing for more progressive policies that would recast the division between different ideologies.

“There’s always this talk about division within the Democratic Party, ideological differences,” she said.

“But I actually think they’re generational differences. Because the America we grew up in is nothing like the America our parents or our grandparents grew up in.”

Other than Cortez, Kamala Harris is part of the list even though her approval rating has been shaky. According to The Hill, strategists have mentioned that it would be difficult to convince Black women “who helped catapult Biden to the White House — to vote for anyone else as the party’s standard-bearer.”

Biden has said that he will seek another term in the White House, but hinted that "it remains to be seen" whether this would actually materialize.
