The impromptu gathering of hundreds of U.S. generals in the country next week is expected to be used by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as a "show of force" and resemble a "pep rally," according to a new report.

Citing three sources familiar with the matter, CNN detailed that Hegseth is set to underscore the importance of the "warrior ethos" and outline a new vision for the military. New readiness, fitness and grooming standards are expected to be presented.

"It's about getting the horses into the stable and whipping them into shape," an official told the outlet. "This is a showcase for Hegseth to tell them: get on board, or potentially have your career shortened," the official added.

The outlet noted that, as of Friday, there were no plans for Hegseth to make a security-related announcement in the meeting. The fact that such events are practically unprecedented had raised alarms among some of those called to Virginia, with some saying on Thursday that it raised security concerns. . "People are very concerned. They have no idea what it means," one person told The Washington Post, which first reported on the call.

Others had expressed frustration about making generals travel from across the world to attend the meeting, saying they should have at least been told what the meeting is about. "Are we taking every general and flag officer out of the Pacific right now?" one official said. "All of it is weird."

CNN added that all those called to the meeting are expected to attend, and those who can't will need to provide "an extremely good reason for their absence."
