A Premier League footballer who was arrested last summer involving an alleged rape got his bail extended until July. Despite the ongoing investigation, the international player remains unnamed to this day and has not been suspended by his team.

In a statement to the Mirror UK, the Metropolitan Police said the player has been granted a bail extension for the third time until early July and is still allowed to continue playing for his team. The footballer has denied all allegations and following his initial arrest, the top-flight club said it is aware of the allegations, but the player would not be suspended while the police investigation remains open.

“We have confirmed that the player denies the allegations and is on police bail pending the outcome of their inquiries. There have been no charges laid and the player can fulfill his professional commitments including permitted travel,” the club said.

The international footballer is accused of raping two women in separate attacks. The first took place in April 2021 while the other was in June of last year. He was arrested in July in a residence located in north London after a woman in her 20s filed a complaint. The woman was staying in a five-star resort at the time of the rape and quickly fled home. She approached authorities upon her arrival in the U.K. and showed photos of apparent bruising on her body she had suffered from the alleged attack.

While in custody, the football player was re-arrested over two more incidents of rape of another woman. However, the police have confirmed that no action will be taken against him relating to one of those two incidents.

“No further action will be taken in relation to the alleged offense in June 2021 because the relevant legislation had not yet come into effect at the time it is said to have occurred,” a police spokesperson said. This development was explained to the complainant but the woman continues to be supported by authorities.

The club reassured that they will keep the matter under close consideration and review the player’s status further if circumstance change. “We take our commitments and responsibilities seriously and have followed our safeguarding policies and procedures,” the club said.
