Princess Diana wouldn’t have agreed with how Meghan Markle went about her baby shower earlier this year. Even though the two royals never met, it seems as though they would’ve also had a tricky relationship with each other.

While speaking with Daily Mail, former royal private secretary Patrick Jephson called Meghan’s decision to have a lavish baby shower “strange.” The Duchess of Sussex’s party was hosted by her friends at the Mark Hotel in New York.

“In royal business, particularly if you adopt a high profile, what counts is not the details of the explanation but how it looks and how it fits into an existing pattern,” he said. “To have the New York baby shower was a strange decision,” he added.

The former royal staff also said that Princess Diana wouldn’t have done the same thing if it was her who was pregnant. Jephson added that the Princess of Wales also knew when something looked bad, and she made it a point to avoid doing it.

“She knew when she got it wrong, which was rare, and she knew how to keep it looking right. She realized how important that was because monarchy is seen so much not through what they say, or the details of their accounts, or who did what when. It’s the image, the pattern, the repeated behavior over an extended time. That's how people perceive them,” he said.

Last month, royal expert Ingrid Seward told Daily Mail that Princess Diana might not have been supportive of Prince Harry’s decision to wed a divorcee had she been alive. The mom of two wouldn’t have also liked the fact that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex came from very different backgrounds.

“And she certainly would not have liked the control that Meghan has over Harry — I think they might have had a tricky relationship, therefore,” Seward said. But despite the royal expert’s negative predictions, she also said that Princess Diana would’ve been fascinated with Meghan’s problems with her dad, Thomas Markle Sr. The late royal would’ve wanted to know every detail of the duo’s issues.
