South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman criticized his own party for rushing to pass President Donald Trump's sweeping 940-page "big, beautiful bill," arguing that lawmakers need more time to fully review its contents.
Norman, a member of the House Rules Committee, which sets the procedures for how legislation is considered by the full House, told PBS NewsHour correspondent Lisa Desjardins that the bill, in its current form, is a "non-starter," Desjardins wrote in an X post, shared Tuesday shortly after the Senate narrowly passed the bill.
"Norman told me repeatedly that the House needs time to read the bill (also FYI the *Senate* hasn't seen final text!)," Desjardins added in a follow-up X post.
"'Going the way it's going, I don't see how we pass this by Friday,' Norman told me by phone. 'I don't know why we would rush this,'" Desjardins continued.

“Going the way it’s going, I don’t see how we pass this by Friday,” Norman told me by phone. “I don’t know why we would rush this.”
The controversial bill, which will slash Medicaid and SNAP funding for vulnerable Americans in order to fund tax breaks for the nation's wealthiest, passed the Senate on Tuesday after a 50-50 tie was broken by Vice President JD Vance.
Several bipartisan lawmakers, including New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, have voiced strong opposition to the bill. Murkowski expressed regret over its passage in the Senate, saying she hopes the House will reject it.
Meanwhile, President Trump celebrated the bill's advancement in a lengthy post on Truth Social.
"There is so much to be proud of, and EVERYONE got a major Policy WIN — But, the Biggest Winner of them all will be the American People, who will have Permanently Lower Taxes, Higher Wages and Take Home Pay, Secure Borders, and a Stronger and More Powerful Military," he wrote.
"To my GOP friends in the House: Stay UNITED, have fun, and Vote 'YAY.' GOD BLESS YOU ALL!" the president added.
