Sean Penn has made the headlines more than once this year for interviewing Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán while he was still a fugitive.

According to reports, Penn’s article about his encounter with the Sinaloa cartel leader, which was published on Rolling Stone magazine, marked the beginning of Cisne Negro, an operation coordinated by the Mexican Marine corps in order to recapture “El Chapo.”

During a recent interview with Financial Times, the 55-year-old actor denied that his visit led the Mexican police to Guzmán. In addition, he explained that he no longer thinks that the story was a failure as he had previously stated.

“When I said it failed, that turned out not to be the case,” he told FT’s Matthew Garrahan. “There’s no question there’s ultimately been more conversation about the drug war.” And even though he admitted he couldn’t prove it was because of him, he continued, “I’ve noticed that there’s been more debate.”

Penn’s article was a kick in the gonads for many people, especially the Mexican authorities, who had been trying to catch Guzmán since he escaped the maximum-security prison in Almoloya in July 2015. But according to Penn, former Mexican president Vicente Fox had a different point of view.

“He told me he agreed with everything I’d said in the article,” Penn revealed. According to the acotr, Fox told him after they met at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles, where the former president was taking part in a panel.

Fox, who was the head of state in Mexico from 2000 to 2006, has been very immersed in current political matters.

Back in February, the future Milenio TV host gained notoriety in the United States for his blunt response to Donald Trump’s campaign proposal to stop illegal immigration, “building a wall on our southern border that Mexico will pay for.”

“I am not going to pay for this f***ing wall,” Fox reportedly said during an interview with Jorge Ramos on Univision’s “Al Punto.”

Fox has yet to comment on Penn’s recent declarations.
