The pope made waves on Monday by telling reporters that gay priests “should not be marginalized”, adding, “Who am I to judge?”. But in 2010, the then-Buenos Aires cardinal harshly criticized a bill which ended up making Argentina the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage, calling it a "move by the devil” and a “destructive attack on God’s plan”.

Defense Of Marriage Act Struck Down By Supreme Court In 5-4 Ruling

The Supreme Court struck down Section Three of the Defense of Marriage Act, which had denied federal benefits to same-sex marriages. It also ruled that opponents of same-sex marriage did not have "standing" to appeal a lower-court ruling that overturned California’s ban.
