President Donald Trump reportedly believes that bombing Fordo, Iran's main nuclear site buried deep beneath a mountain, is necessary to prevent the country from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The decision will largely determine whether the U.S. gets actively involved in the war between Israel and Iran, considering the former does not have the weapons necessary to inflict a large blow to the facility.
CBS News detailed that Trump approved attack plans on Iran on Tuesday night, but has not made a final decision on giving it the green light. He has been waiting to see whether Tehran announces a decision to abandon its nuclear program.
Israel has not conducted any known strikes on Fordo, perhaps waiting to see what decision Trump makes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has hinted that Israel could attempt to disable the facility in other ways. According to Axios, a U.S. official told the Trump administration they may be able to "do it with humans."
Israel conducted a commando raid last September, which ended up destroying an underground missile factory in Syria. However, the operation was in smaller scale and much closer to Israel. Axios noted that now that Israel has full control of Iran's airspace, such an option is less risky than before.
The war continues in the meantime. On Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is a "dictator" who "cannot be allowed to continue to exist" following the latest barrage of missiles, one of which hit the largest hospital in the south of the country.
Netanyahu seemed to confirm Israel will now go after Khamenei, albeit with a less evident message: No one is immune. All options are on the table," he said when visiting the Soroka hospital in Beersheba, the largest city in southern Israel.
Iranian military spokesperson Iman Tajik said the country targeted an Israeli army command and intelligence center near the hospital with "high precision." He added in a Telegram post that the facility was hit with a combination of drones and missiles. "Now the world can see the intelligence capabilities and pinpoint accuracy or Iran's armed forces missiles."
Soroka hospital sustained extensive damage, different outlets in the country showed. Hospital workers were also seen walking through halls filled with smoke and debris after the impact. The hospital said several areas were damaged and the emergency room was treating several people with minor injuries.
