Kate Middleton was not allowed to be her younger sister Pippa Middleton-Matthews’ maid of honor when she tied the knot years ago. But, during her royal wedding to Prince William in 2011, Pippa served as her maid of honor.

Since the Duchess of Cambridge is a member of the royal family and therefore holds a higher position than Pippa, she couldn’t be her maid of honor. One of the roles of the maid of honor is to assist the bride during her special day. Prince William’s wife wasn’t allowed to assist Pippa when she tied the knot because she is the future Queen of England.

However, when Princess Eugenie wed Jack Brooksbank on Oct. 12, 2018, Princess Beatrice served as her maid of honor. The latter is older than the former, but the rules were bent for them.

This is because Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie hold the same position in the royal family. Even though they are both styled as Princesses and Princess Beatrice is older, they are both considered as non-working royals. The siblings are not also in line to become future Queens.

As such, when Princess Beatrice ties the knot with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi next year, royal fans can expect that Princess Eugenie will be her maid of honor. After all, they are the only two children of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are also very close.

Meanwhile, if Kate isn’t a member of the royal family, she would have served as Pippa’s maid of honor, regardless if she got married to a non-royal first or after the latter. Kate and Pippa are also very close to each other.

In the book “Kate: The Future Queen,” royal author Katie Nicholl said that the Middletons are a very close-knit family. Michael and Carole Middleton, the parents of Kate, Pippa, and James, enjoyed listening to their children’s stories and laughter while they were growing up.

Denise Allford, Kate and Pippa’s former sports coach, said that the sisters were very competitive but not with each other. “They were very much a team,” she said.
