The father of a 10-year-old girl has filed rape charges against an 18-year-old and six others who are reportedly minors for an incident that took place at a school building in Rewari district of Haryana last May 24.
The incident comes not long after videos of the sexual assault made their round on social media. The clip was spotted by a neighbor who notified the family of the victim. An FIR has already been logged at the women’s police station and the accused have been booked under Sections 376D (gang rape), 354C (Voyeurism) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Moreover, the seven boys behind the incident were also booked under the relevant section of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), Information Technology Act and Scheduled Castes/Schedules Tribes Act.
One of the suspects was reportedly 18-years-old while the age of the other suspects were between 10 to 12.
“The child was playing in the school compound close to her home. The accused took her inside and committed the crime,” the official police report read.
The school building where the sexual assault reportedly took place was adjacent to a playground where the kids were said to be playing. No classes were going on at that time, suspended due to the pandemic.
"We have filed a case after the matter was brought to our notice and arrested all the accused. The child survivor and the accused live in the same neighbourhood. Neighbours identified the accused after watching the video," read a report by Hansraj, DSP (Headquarters) Rewari.
The minors tied to the case were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board and were sent to correctional homes. The 18-year-old is now at the district jail.
Police are still looking for other minors shown in the video and the ones who shared it on social media.
