Team USA midfielder Giovanni Reyna was almost sent home during the World Cup by Team USA due to a lack of effort in training and in a pre-tournament scrimmage.
Gio Reyna was almost sent home from the World Cup, according to The Athletic. Greg Berhalter admits an “unnamed player” had to apologise to teammates for his behaviour in Qatar. “We were ready to book a plane ticket home, that's how extreme it was… pic.twitter.com/U8CEXMEKGV

Reyna didn’t start a single game for Team USA and ESPN reports that Reyna did apologize to the entire team for his lack of effort. US Manager Greg Berhalter spoke at the HOW Institute for Society’s Summit on Moral Leadership and some of his comments were later published. He had stated that the US “had a player that was clearly not meeting expectations on and off the field.”
Reyna only narrowly survived a team vote 13-12 to send him home, according to @jasonrmcintyre. There were also issues over his training ethic pre-Wales and his reaction after not coming on, too.

Berhalter said those comments were supposed to be off the record. Reyna ended up playing just 7 minutes against England. He also played the entire second half in the Round of 16 against Netherlands.

Reyna’s lack of playing time during the tournament was a major storyline for Team USA, which lacked the ability to score goals in the World Cup. Berhalter had said he started Jordan Morris because he thought Morris’ speed and power gave the team a boost.
Reyna apologized to the team during the World Cup, according to reports.
