A newborn baby girl was rescued by villagers who spotted her mother burying the infant alive.

The shocking incident happened on Saturday, July 10, in a village in India’s Bihar.

The infant’s mother, identified as Laxmi Devi, a resident of Lakhisarai district, was burying her newborn baby girl alive under the cover of darkness when the infant’s cries caught the attention of a woman who raised an alarm.

"I was walking on the roof of my house when I saw a woman digging a trench and a baby lying near it crying loudly. I got suspicious and raised an alarm. By the time we reached the spot, she had buried the baby but we caught the woman," Asha Devi, a local resident, told the police, the Gulf News reported.

The villagers rushed to the spot and rescued the baby from a ditch. The infant was unresponsive as she was covered in a blanket and pressed down with bricks from above the ditch.

Police officers rushed to the spot and transported the infant to a local government hospital. The baby is now reported to be in a stable condition.

"The baby appears to be six-seven days old and very weak but she is out of danger now," Dr. Rakesh Kumar, who is treating the baby, said.

The infant’s mother has been arrested and the police are investigating the incident. The exact motive behind the mother’s heinous actions is unclear at this time.

This incident comes just days after a three-month-old baby girl was abducted and murdered by two persons including a transgender in South Mumbai.

The infant, who was sleeping next to her mother, was abducted from her home in Ambedkar Nagar in the Cuffe Parade, during the wee hours on Friday, July 9.

The family members approached the police and filed a case of kidnapping report after they found the infant missing.

"We have named the transgender, identified as Kanu, as the prime suspect as she had come to our house on Thursday evening and demanded Rs 2000 as a baby girl was born in our house," said the child's grandfather, Chandrakant.

"We did not give Kanu any money and asked her to come on the day of her naming ceremony. The transgender then threatened and left," the grandfather said.

The accused transgender and an accomplice were arrested. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime and took the investigators to the spot where they had buried the infant's body.

The baby girl's body was recovered from a marshy land along the Arabian Sea.
