A 51-year-old murder convict who was granted parole to attend his daughter’s wedding allegedly fled from police custody on Sunday, May 16.

The convict, Ved Prakash Singh was serving a life sentence for his involvement in a murder case that happened in Mumbai in 1994.

"Ved was shifted to Mumbai in the early 90s where he was engaged with a dairy-related business. In 1994, he had committed a murder there and was sentenced to life imprisonment," Superintendent of Police Sultanpur, Vipin Mishra, told The Times of India.

According to the police, Singh managed to escape the Mumbai prison in 2001. The Maharashtra police caught him in 2019, from his ancestral home. He was then transferred to the Yerwada jail in Pune.

On April 30 this year, Singh requested 10-day parole to attend his daughter's wedding. The parole was granted and on May 10, a sub-inspector and two constables of the Maharashtra Police escorted the murder convict to his ancestral village, The Times of India reported.

Sub-inspector Sachin Nimbalkar, one of the cops who accompanied Singh to his home, told the outlet that the officers asked his relatives to lock the convict in a room.

"On May 15, when the police went to open the lock, Ved was not there. He had fled from the room after breaking a window grill," Nimbalkar said.

The Superintendent of police said the officers tried to locate the man but failed. A search operation was initiated in the nearby areas to nab the convict.

The officer confirmed that a case has been registered in connection to the current incident. The authorities have urged locals having any information about the runaway convict to report to the police.

In a similar incident, the Meerut city police have issued a manhunt for a drug addict husband who fled the scene after throwing his wife off the third-floor balcony of their apartment building. The incident took place in the Kalia Gardhi area of Meerut, in the wee hours of Thursday.

According to the police, the suspect, identified as Birendra Singh, who worked as a driver allegedly murdered his wife following a dispute. The victim fell headfirst onto the ground and was pronounced dead at the scene.
