A 30-year-old nun allegedly killed herself at her convent chapel out of depression, authorities said.

The deceased, Sister Mary Mercy was found hanging from the window of the Our Lady of Assumption Convent chapel at Sadiq in the Faridkot district of Punjab, India on Tuesday, Nov. 30, the police said.

She belonged to Franciscan Immaculatine Sisters, an Italian congregation founded in 1881.

According to the police, a suicide note was recovered from the scene in which the nun said she decided to kill herself due to loneliness and depression.

In the note, the woman also apologized to her parents, friends, and companion sisters for taking the extreme step and failing to fulfill her commitment to serve the church.

However, Mercy’s family members have raised suspicion over her death, saying she had no reason to end her life.

Mercy’s father, John Ouseph claims that his daughter sounded happy when he spoke to her over the phone on Nov. 29.

Ouseph said his daughter had promised to call him on her birthday on Thursday, Dec. 2, the Onmanorama reported.

An autopsy performed at the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital revealed Mercy died of asphyxiation due to hanging.

The body was transported to her hometown at Arthunkal in the Alappuzha district in Kerala for cremation, said the police.

Mercy's family has demanded the body should be subjected to a second autopsy to bring out the truth behind her death.

The police have registered a case under Section 174 ( preparation of inquest report in case a person has committed suicide or has been murdered) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), said Chamkaur Singh, Station House Officer at Sadiq.

The police are investigating the incident to ascertain the circumstances that led to her death.

In another incident, a 78-year-old Nigerian woman was murdered on her way to church allegedly by ritual killers who also took away her body parts.

On Sunday, Nov. 28, Veronica Dare, a member of the Deeper Life Bible Church in Iwaro Oka, in the Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, was on her way to the church to clean the premises when she was ambushed, killed and her body parts removed.

A police source said the investigators believe that the victim was killed inside the church by suspected ritual killers before she was dragged outside where her body parts were removed.

The death is being investigated, authorities said.
