The Gallos Blancos of Querétaro square off against the Águilas of América on Friday night in what promises to be one of the most hotly disputed matches in this year's Liga MX Apertura. Querétaro has been trying to stir up its players' competitive spirits and its fans' anticipation of the match by circulating a promotional flyer on social media which depicts several of its players on horseback, with the caption, "To the conquest of América". Scroll down to hit a live streaming link of the action at La Corregidora when it airs at 9:30pm EST on Friday, Nov. 1st.
Querétaro will come into Friday night's game at eighth place in the Liga MX, tied with Chiapas with 22 points. To go along with the six victories they've notched so far this year, they've got four draws and five losses to their name. That flyer for their match with América began circulating two weeks ago, and they might've been caught looking too far forward: on the 26th, they dropped a match against mediocre Atlas 3-1. After Atlas pulled ahead 1-0 early on in that game, the Quereteran squad evened things up when Yasser Corona headed in a corner - or so they thought. When referees got together to review the goal, they found that the shot had hit the post but never actually crossed the goal line, and the point was retracted from the scoreboard. That seemed to suck a lot of the air out of the squad's sails, and they never recovered.
Speaking of momentum, Friday night's game could be decisive as far as Querétaro's future goes: a win or a draw will likely pump up the team and, just as importantly, keep it on the list of eight teams who qualify for the playoffs. UANL is hot on their heels, with 21 points, and a loss to América could cause Querétaro to fall off that list. América is still sitting pretty at the top slot in the standings, but they're no longer as untouchable as they might've seemed a few weeks ago. They lost to the Tigres 0-1 on Wednesday. They made short work of Puebla in a 3-1 win on Oct. 26, but on the 22nd, they lost 0-1 in CCL action to the Liga Deportiva Alajuense. And Santos has managed to draw quite close to them in the Liga standings, with 32 points to América's 35.
