On Sunday, December 6 Venezuela had its midterm elections where the opposition against Nicolás Maduro’s Chavista government has triumphed. According to official results early Monday, the opposition Democratic Alliance had won at least 99 seats in the 167-member National Assembly, more than double the 46 seats for the ruling United Socialist Party. The victory was even larger than expected since the country’s opposition hasn’t won a legislative or presidential vote since the late populist Hugo Chávez won the presidency in 1998. “This has been the most abusive campaign ever, but the important thing is that we were able to use democracy to beat a system that is deeply undemocratic,” said the prominent opposition deputy Julio Borges.

In addition, a majority will allow the opposition to free political prisoners such as one of its leaders Leopoldo Lopez. Now, celebrities all over the place and famous Venezuelans (many whom are unable to live in their country) unite to celebrate the triumph that brings back hope to the South American nation.
